Brief review

An article on page 2 presents a report on the Great Winter Bird Count Campaign. This campaign was first carried out in 1995. This year special attention was paid to the waterfowls. Total amount of waterfowls observed by the Campaign participants was 135,545. Several competitions took place within the Winter Count Campaign. The winners of each one are listed on page 3.

On page 3 there is a story about a Swan from Khersonska Oblast. The Swan suffered from excessive cold and was saved by a group of children.
Another article on page 4 deals with the similar lot of a Magpie fed by a family from Kyivska Oblast.
Pages 5-6 give an information about the flight phenomenon in birds and some mammals.

A separate article on page 6 reports on facts of illegal hunting in Slovakia. Two Great White Egrets killed and hanged by unknown hunter were observed by SOVS members during the Winter Count campaign in the country.

Pages 7-8 are devoted to the world news. An article on page 7 deals with the threat to the environment caused by Iraq war. It is emphasized that the War is dangerous for 42 IBAs and endemic Mesopotamian wetlands.

News placed on page 8 tell about the ecological catastrophes and Sumatra forest conservation.

Pages 9-10 deal with the problem of spring hunting in Ukraine and Russia. This year, under the pressure of nature conservation organisations the Ministry of Ecology of Ukraine refused to sign the permission for spring hunting. The efforts of Russian organisations aimed at spring hunting prohibition are also considered as successive ones (page 10).

Short news from the bottom of page 10 tell about the Flamingo conservation program in Cyprus and the White Stork museum in Kaluzhskaya Oblast (Russia).

Page 11 presents information about contraband transport of falconid birds through the territory of Ukraine. The latest case took place in November, 2002. A Russian citizen tried to carry 9 birds, 7 Sakers and 2 Gyrfalcons, through the Customs of Donetsk Airport. He was arrested by Security Officers. The birds were cured and transported to the zoo.

Page 12 gives a Bird Portrait: rather a poetical story about the Bullfinches. Bottom of page presents the results of the latest questionnaire competition and the names of winners.

The results of the "Bird of the Year 2002" campaign are summarised on pages 13 and 20. Among 250 participants in the Campaign, the young birdwatchers from Poltavska, Zaporizka, Kyivska, Luganska, Mykolayivska, Sumska, Volynska, Dnipropetrovska Oblasts and Crimea were the most active ones. List of the Campaign winners is given on page 20.

A regular fragment of a book by R. Sorysh devoted to the falcon hunting is given on pages 14-16.

On page 17 there is an article about the "Berkut", the Ukrainian Ornithological Journal, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

A communication on page 19 deals with the Ruff, a bird depicted on the issue cover page. On the same page a review on the phenomenon of bird songs and its relation to human speech is given.
