Ringing Corncrake in Ukraine
The Corncrake is not red-listed in Ukraine, though its European
population is declining. It is an indicator species for wet grasslands in river
floodplains.
The project on ringing Concncrakes during autumn migration has
started in 2007 in the bottle-neck area of Crimea (Ay-Petri Yaila). This was done
within the frame of the project “Establishment of Part-Time Ringing Station to
Assess Numbers of Corncrakes Migrating Though Crimean Bottle-Neck” and will last
for 5 years. The project is supported by the RSPB and conducted in cooperation
with the Yalta Mountain-forest Nature Reserve, as the ringing station is located
within its boundary.
The project started in 2007. It included development of methodology
with accounting for foreign and national experience and species ecology. Detailed
instructions and field forms were prepared; team of volunteers established, all
necessary equipment acquired; plan of work agreed upon with the Republican Committee
of Natural Resources of the Autonomous Republic of Krym, and licence received
from the Ministry of Environmental protection of Ukraine. The ringing was conducted
in August-September.
Results, Dissemination, Further Plans
During fild work, almost 680 corncrakes were ringed. The project
will continue in 2008. Proposal is considered on ringing Corncrakes also during
spring migration. Based on first year results, relevant article is published in
the membership newsletter.
