Site Conservation Actions 2006

Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Birds continues to implement Site Conservation Actions under the IBA Programme in Ukraine in 2006. Traditionally, projects are selected by experts on the competitive basis. According to the selection criteria of the PIN Matra project that supports financially winners of the competition, the site conservation activity should be aimed at resolving certain conservation problems at IBAs and implementing conservation management objectives at the sites.

This year, last round of the competition was conducted at two stages in late winter, when two groups of projects were selected — projects implemented during December 2005 – March 2006 and projects implemented in spring 2006. As in previous years, selected projects involve different conservation issues, for example, carrying out biotechnical and hydro–engineering measures at IBAs, conducting awareness raising and educational campaigns, improving site management, promoting IBAs at the regional levels, and building IBA coordinators and caretakers networks, etc.

Generally, 12 projects have been selected for implementation, including project, selected in 2005, and one project has been canceled.
